What is HUD or the Department of Housing and Urban Development?

The Department of Housing and Urban Development,

or HUD, makes it possible for low income households to acquire affordable homes through public housing, rent subsidies, and low-income housing grants.

To qualify for a HUD program, a family's annual household income cannot exceed a certain amount. These income caps are determined by the state. In addition to helping many families qualify for suitable homes, HUD is recognized for implementing the Fair Housing Act of 1968. This act supports community expansion and fights to stop housing discrimination, wherein any person regardless of sex, race, or nationality can attain suitable housing.

HUD is widely available, and the housing development open the door to homeownership for single mothers, recovering drug abusers, disabled individuals, elderly and formerly homeless people. What's more, HUD properties are required to meet or exceed a certain standard, which is a major contrast from many public housing developments found in urban cities that manifest unlivable conditions. New home developments can set aside a certain number of HUD homes, in which the department provides the developer with a subsidize payment. If an apartment community or private landlord accepts Section 8 tenants, subsidies are given to the renter, and the renter in return provides the voucher to their landlord.
